Boosting Fish Stocks and Incomes: The Caribbean
Fish Sanctuary Partnership Initiative (C-FISH)
In the tropicalwatersof theCaribbean,a teamofcommitted
CARIBSAVE scientists, island residentsandbusinessesare
working togetheronecosystem-basedadaptation to fortify
reefsandfisheriesagainstmultiple threats.
C-FISH isa four-yearproject
started in2012 togivecoastal
communities thefinance, technology
and training they require tomanage
theirmarinesanctuarieseffectively
andsustainably.
THEPROBLEM
TheeconomiesofCaribbean Islands
reston thehealthanddiversityoffish
lifeandcoral reefs.But thesecritical
assetsareunder threat frompollution,
overfishingandclimatechange.
Depletionoffish stockshashadadirect
impacton the livelihoodsof themany
peoplewhomakea living infisheries
and tourism - leading tounemployment
and in somecasesaviciouscycleof
povertyandcrime.Degraded reef
also leavescoastalcommunitiesmore
vulnerable to the storm surgesand
hurricanes increasingly resulting from
climatechange,as thecoast’sprotective
naturalbarrier is lost.
THESOLUTION
Marine reserves, sometimescalled
fish sanctuaries,areaprovenway to
replenishfish stocksand restorecoral.
Fish lifewithinaprotectedareacan

boosting stocks insideandoutside the
reserve.Morefishmeansahealthier reef
andamore resilientcommunity.And
whobetter tomanage these sanctuaries
than then thepeoplewhose livelihoods
dependon them.
C-FISH isprovidingfinancialand
technical support for themanagement
of15community-basedfish sanctuaries
in Jamaica,StLucia,Grenada,Dominica,
StVincentand theGrenadines.The
project isdelivering the trainingand
resourcesneeded tohelpmanage the
sanctuaries, through fundingpatrol
boatsandwardens,artificial reef
creationandcommunityawareness.
It ishelpinggrow smallbusinesses to
support thedevelopmentofalternative
livelihoodsandbuildingmutually
beneficial linkagesbetween the tourism
sectorand localcommunities. It is
alsoassisting in thedevelopmentof
innovative ‘green tech’tools suchas
the ‘Aquacam’formonitoringfish

Toensurea sustainablefinancial future
for the sanctuaries theC-FISHFundhas
beenestablished togenerate income
from the saleofcraftsandcommunity-
